Committed to Serving the Citizens of Southwest Florida

Appointed to the bench by Governor Ron DeSantis, James Stewart proudly serves the citizens of Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, and Lee counties as a Circuit Court Judge. Judge Stewart currently presides over circuit civil cases in Collier County.

Judge Stewart will be on the ballot on August 18th and needs your support. He hopes to continue serving the citizens of Southwest Florida for many years, defending the Constitution, and upholding the rule of law.

Judge Stewart believes that public trust in the justice system is strengthened when the law is applied equally, consistently, and without bias. He recognizes that appearing in court is often one of the most challenging moments in a person’s life. With that understanding, Judge Stewart is committed to treating every individual with dignity and respect, ensuring each person has a meaningful opportunity to be heard and receive a prompt and efficient resolution to their case.

About Judge Stewart

Having handled thousands of criminal, civil, and juvenile delinquency cases in his career, including more than 100 jury trials, Judge Stewart brings extensive courtroom experience and a deep understanding of the law and rules of procedure to the bench.

Prior to his appointment, Judge Stewart served as Deputy Chief Assistant State Attorney, leading the Collier County State Attorney’s Office. While there, he served as a liaison to local agencies, supervised an office of over 40 employees, and applied his many years of experience to train and mentor other attorneys. In his career at the State Attorney’s Office, Judge Stewart prosecuted many high-profile cases, including a number of homicides.

Judge Stewart has devoted his entire career to public service. He remains committed to defending the Constitution, upholding the rule of law, and serving the citizens of Southwest Florida.

Judge Stewart extends his interest in service to the community outside the courtroom. He has served as a director on the boards of both the Collier County Bar Association and the Collier County Bar Foundation, the latter being a charitable organization which emphasizes service to youth and the underprivileged. He frequently volunteers for local Mock Trial competitions for local high school and law school students.

Judge Stewart is a previous Chair of the Twentieth Circuit Grievance Committee “B”, determining whether lawyers violated professional conduct rules and whether discipline was warranted. He is also a previous Vice Chair of the Florida Bar’s Criminal Procedure Rules Committee. In 2023, Judge Stewart was appointed by the Florida Supreme Court to serve on the Committee on Standard Jury Instructions in Criminal Cases where he worked collaboratively to create and maintain jury instructions that accurately reflect Florida statutes and caselaw. He is currently the Vice Chair of the Florida Bar’s Constitutional Judiciary Committee.

Judge Stewart is married with two children. Judge Stewart’s wife, Ashli, was born and raised in Collier County, and also practices law in Naples.
